Fuel Flow Monitor Evaluation
by Vic Leggott
S.T.Aviation gave me the job to evaluate the
fuel monitor in my Jabiru. It is primarily designed to be fitted directly
into the panel front but due to lack of space in my panel, I mounted it in a
small plastic box purchased from Maplins, for a few pence.
It is easy enough to wire up. As the two push buttons and low fuel warning
LED can be mounted away from the unit you will need a soldering iron to make
the connections using the wire and heatshrink insulation provided. The
display is connected to the main control box by about a foot long ribbon
cable which has a RS232 plug on the end of it.

The unit is very user
friendly. The only button pushing required is to set the initial tank
contents when refuelling. I've got mine hooked up to my Garmin GPS and I get
an alternating display of l/hr and duration or l/nm and range in Nm.
I can recommend the unit for its ease of use with a display that is very
clear and the information read at a glance. The opportunity to fly the
aircraft for maximum range and economy is a big advantage.
Obviously gadgets are not an alternative to proper flight planning and fuel
requirements but this one can help in safe decision making if circumstances
should change on route.
Here is a rough graph showing the consumption for a given RPM and speed from
tests which were carried out (on an early SP):
