Choke & Carb Heat Cable
There have been two failures of the cable where the outer attaches to the
threaded ferrule for attachment to the panel . A faulty cable usually shows up
during fitting and during the first few operations the outer is observed moving
when the control is operated. In a recent incident the cable outer failed at six
hours and this resulted in the choke remaining on although the cockpit control
was pushed in (off). During the following coaching on the fourth flight the
engine started to run roughly due to one cylinder's plugs fouling and a tight
circuit was made and successful landing followed.
Jabiru builders
Check your choke and carb heat cables before and after installation, get someone
to cycle the control and make sure the outer is secure. Additional security
would be to secure the outer cable to the firewall.
Jabiru operators
If your aircraft has flown 25 hours it is unlikely that you will have a problem.
Get someone to cycle the control and make sure the outer is secure. Additional
security would be to secure the outer cable to the firewall. Make a note in your
logbooks that the cable: has been checked.
Throttle Cable Fitting
Care must be taken to make sure that the routing of the cable does not apply a
side load to the carburettor. We have experienced an installation where the side
load pulled the carb off of the engine (Luckily on the ground).
Check your installation and re-route if necessary. Additionally you can wire/tie
the cable to the carb heat box hose clamp to get a straight run.
