A periodic (every 100 hours or 6 mths) leakdown
test is essential to ensure that your engine is performing at its peak and that
all is well internally. This tests valve, piston ring and head joint sealing in
one go. This is especially important for school aircraft which may have suffered
abuse. This uses an air line to put pressure (80psi) into the spark plug hole
and measures how fast the cylinder 'leaks' the pressure away. This is a standard
test used to test the health of aircraft engines. A leaky engine can be caused
by many factors, such as corrosion of the bores or a poorly seated/ badly
adjusted/ burnt valve.
